TechKids Recycle Racers
TechKids is an after school program to encourage young girls and boys, 3rd-5th grade, to pursue their interests in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities. During this program students will design, build and compete with vehicles out of all recycled materials based on the Go Green extra curricular materials from Engineering is Elementary curriculum. In “Recycle Racers” we will turn recycled items into race cars that will end with a final competition where vehicles will be raced at our final meeting. Throughout the process, students will learn basic engineering and collaboration skills in small groups. Classes will be student led by TC Central High School students, but an adult teacher/mentor will always be present.
There are many reasons to introduce students to engineering in elementary school:
- Engineering activities engage students in hands-on, real-world experiences that can enliven math, science and other content areas.
- Engineering fosters problem solving skills and testing of alternative solutions.
- By encouraging explorations that build things or take them apart to see how they work while students are still in elementary school we can keep these interests alive as they grow older.
- As our society increasingly depends on engineering and technology, our students need to understand these fields.
This 4-week workshop is geared towards elementary school students who have an interest in science, technology, engineering, and/or math. Think your student is interested? Sign up today!
