About Middle School Cheerleading 

Cheerleading consists of many skills. Cheerleaders are required to lead the spirit and energy the crowd directs towards the football team. We know by studies that players often perform better when they are given positive attention from the people in the stands who are there to support them. Cheerleaders at the middle school level will be taught age appropriate stunts, flexibility skills such as splits and jumps, and tumbling. East Middle School's Cheer Team is open to 6th - 8th Graders. West Middle School's Cheer Team is open to 6th - 8th Graders, space is limited to the first 30 registrants at EMS and WMS.

Monday, August 26th, 2019 - Wednesday, October 16th, 2019.

East Middle School Schedule

Welcome to the EMS cheerleading program. The EMS cheer program is a high-energy developmental program that focuses on the fundamentals of cheerleading: cheers, stunts, dance, gymnastics, teamwork and spirit! We invite 6th-8th grade girls and boys to come join in the fun! There are no cuts. All experience levels and abilities are welcome. In fact, many of our very best cheerleaders are complete beginners on the first day of practice! We believe that everyone who works hard is a great cheerleader. Like other LEAP programs, athletes will be evaluated and divided into teams in the first days of the season. Because cheer is a program where teammates depend on each other to be their best, we ask that your athlete has great attendance at practice and games in order to ensure a good experience. The EMS cheer program is divided into 3 seasons - football, basketball and competitive. You may participate in only one or two seasons; many athletes opt to participate in only one or two seasons. However, in order to be eligible to join the competitive team, you must participate in either football or basketball season. Registration for the fall program is for football only - through October. There will be another sign up for later seasons. The EMS cheer program is co-coached by Dorothy Switzer and Michelle Steffen. Dorothy is a Central High School graduate and alumni of the prestigious Alma College cheer team. She is excited to begin her first year with the EMS program. Michelle holds a minor in physical education from Hillsdale College where she was a member of the cheerleading team. Michelle enters her 4th year and 10th season with the EMS program. 

  • Practices: All practices will take place at East Middle School in the cafeteria.  

Week 1:

  • First day of practice - Wednesday, August 28th - 6:00-8:00 p.m. , with a parent meeting to follow @ 8:00 pm.
  • Thurs. 8/29 - 6:00-8:30 p.m.

  • Wed. 9/4 - 3:00-5:30 (second parent meeting to follow if necessary for new joiners)

    **Your athlete may be scheduled for practice/games on any of the list days/times. They may not be scheduled for all of the days/times listed above. While most games are held at EMS, we may participate in one or more "away" games at WMS or SEAS. You are responsible for arranging transportation for your child. West Middle School Schedule

Welcome to WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL CHEER!

We are soooo excited to get started!!

I would like to introduce myself. I am Jerrilynn Pike and I have be coaching cheerleading for over 20 years! I have coached many ages, levels and formats of cheer but I have to say there is something so special about football cheerleading! I am the former Ferris State University competitive Coach, MHSAA competitive cheer Judge, high school, middle school and elementary sideline and competitive coach. I am currently the Head coach of TC Xtreme cheer.

This year we will have two assistant coaches, Megan Gudith and Justine Groesser. Both are former West Alumni and former athletes of mine. Megan is currently also my assistant coach at TC Xtreme. Both Megan and Justine have a passion and excitement for this sport that I cant wait for your girls to be exposed to.

I am so excited to get to know all your girls and to see all our returners!

We will have our first practice next week Tuesday the 27th. We want to have a little extra long practice next week to get as much material taught as we possibly can. I would like to have a 3:30-8:00 practice and also have a team pizza party. Please meet at the football field on the track. We will be teaching all our cheers as well as handing out information for the season. Please bring $5.00 for pizza and drinks. If you have a dietary request or food allergy please private message me and let me know. Parents Are asked to stay for a short meeting at 8:00pm so I can introduce the basic outline for the season and go over materials we will need to order for your girls.

If you haven’t already you will need to get a current physical. You CANNOT practice or cheer without this. It MUST be new for this school year and not an old one from last school year. Good news is, they are usable for the entire upcoming school year.

Please make sure the girls ALWAYS have a water bottle. They MUST be in appropriate practice wear consisting of shorts (or leggings) T-shirt, white socks and cheer shoes (which we will go over on Tuesday) please only wear athletic wear tank tops. No camies or spaghetti strap tops. Also please wear hair up off shoulders and pulled off face. I would HIGHLY Suggest that they have a “cheer” bag, so it is always packed with clothes and their shoes, hair ties, and even an extra set of practice clothes (just in case)

Also, I am looking for a few parents who would like to get in and roll your sleeves up with us! I am looking for someone to take over concession duties, and also a parent who wants to set up the parent communication app (which I can walk you through) and the big one and most important to the girls... the DINNER schedule!!! Lol. In past seasons we have had parents sign up to help bring the girls food in between games. I am looking for someone to Head this, both Megan and I manage 8 cheer teams which is around 150 athletes and families! so we would appreciate this being taken over and anyone who is interested please private message me.

Looking forward to meeting everyone next week. If you cannot make Tuesday please let me know so we can make arrangements.

Helpful Information

  • Sports Physicals are required for Middle School Sideline Cheer. Physicals must be turned in to the Alpha Office at East Middle School or the Main Office at West Middle School before the start of the season.External LinkDownload sports physical form

Transportation is NOT provided for this LEAP offering, transportation will be the sole responsibility of the participants parent/guardian

East Middle School

  • Practice – hair must be worn completely off the shoulders. (no half ups)
  • Gum, food, jewelry, and barrettes are not allowed as these pose safety risks.
  • Please bring a water bottle and wear comfortable athletic clothing to practice.
  • All practices will be held in the East Middle School cafeteria or outside; please arrive on time.
  • Participants will need to purchase undershorts through their coach (cost is approximately $5-10)
  • For cold weather, please have a black or gold jacket or sweatshirt to wear as well as black or gold gloves, hats, etc.
  • Participation fee includes uniform shirt.

West Middle School

  • Practice – hair must be worn completely off the shoulders. (no half ups)
  • Gum, food, jewelry, and barrettes are not allowed as these pose safety risks.
  • Please bring a water bottle and wear comfortable athletic clothing to practice.
  • Participants are required to provide white athletic shoes.
  • Practices begin the week of August 26th, 2019 at West Middle School.
  • New athletes MUST purchase accessories package. If you are returning, you may use what you've received from years previous OR order the accessories by the pieces that you need.

  • Fundraising:
    • We will do ONE team fundraiser to help maintain our team account balance. Fundraiser will be announced the first week of practice. All team fundraising goes to the team to help pay for uniforms, uniform maintenance or repairs, end of the season banquets, team parties and any other team related needs. Money or items purchased with raised funds do not go to the individual athlete but instead stays with the West Middle school program. Each athlete is expected to participate in fundraising efforts.

Registration Deadline & Details

  • Deadline: Friday, August 23, 2019. 
  • Registration deadlines are final. Late registrations may not be accepted after the posted registration close date.

  • If your child does not attend a TCAPS school, select the "Out of District" option.
    • In an effort to be a good community partner, LEAP will accept non-TCAPS students when possible. Space is limited and enrollment may be capped for various offerings. For high demand activities TCAPS students will receive priority.

Payment is required at the time of registration. To register online using a Discover, MasterCard, Visa, or ACH (via a checking or savings account) please register below. Payment with cash or check can be made at the LEAP office located at Central High School, 1150 Milliken, Traverse City. Please use the 1st (smaller) auditorium entrance - we are located just inside the doors to the right. Summer Office Hours are Mondays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
