Girls Rugby Grades 6-8
Middle School Rugby welcomes 6th - 8th grade girls. This is an introductory practice program to teach the sport to interested players with a possible game/scrimmage opportunity at the end of the season. Rugby is a world renowned sport increasingly gaining popularity in America. It's a fast-paced sport and we are excited to grow rugby and all of its opportunities in Traverse City. No experience is needed and all are welcome! Because rugby is a tough contact sport, we prioritize teaching safety so rugby players can keep playing this sport as they grow up.
Practice Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6 PM at Meijer Fields on Franke Road
Girls Coach: Coach Tania
Coach Tania grew up in the very rugby proud country of South Africa. She has not only been a keen participator in this sport but has also been linked with many rugby teams providing physical therapy to both provincial and national teams. Coach Tania provides coaching for all the local ladies rugby teams and is excited to introduce youth to this inclusive and empowering sport.
About the Game: Rugby is one of the few full-contact sports played by women in large numbers around the world. Playing rugby gives girls the tools to grow into a strong, smart woman. More girls are playing rugby then ever before! As rugby continues to grow in popularity, there will be even more opportunities for girls and women to find success on the rugby pitch. Traverse City boasts a long-standing high school girls rugby team from which local players have received collegiate scholarships for rugby. Many women from Traverse City are playing for professional league teams and many former high school players continue to play rugby in our local women's club team. Middle School rugby players graduate to further opportunities like high school rugby, collegiate scholarships and even national and Olympic futures in this challenging new sport. The rugby pitch is a great place to make friends as you work together as a team. Playing rugby gives youth the tools necessary to grow into strong smart leaders on and off the rugby pitch. Women rugby players are now coaching rugby as well as refereeing rugby. This is no longer a man-dominated sport. It's never too early or late to begin a life long participation and love for this amazing and challenging sport.
