Helpful Information

  • After the end of the season, there will be boat cleanup and de-rigging. Coach Chris will communicate this information to the team.
  • Women's rowing occupies a unique niche in the NCAA scholarship availability for women. Nationwide, nearly one third of all eligible women rowing at the high school competitive level receive scholarships to NCAA institutions. Whether you choose to pursue an athletic scholarship or not, rowing teaches many important lessons such as team work, discipline, self-confidence and a willingness to work hard and never give up.
  • The Boardman Lake offers the perfect rowing experience for high school student athletes in our area. It is centrally located between the two public high schools and to the surrounding participating schools, is well protected from wind, has very little other lake traffic and has over 2,000 meters of "rowable" water. This is the same distance rowed in most collegiate, national and international regattas.
  • Returning rowers will be able to use their existing uniforms and logo gear.

Letters from Current Rowers

“Rowing is one of the best things that has happened to me. The experiences have changed me just as much as the people I’ve met have. It has taught me that I can do more than I thought possible and that my body and brain are stronger than I thought capable. It is a sport that will push you to your limits and then let you surpass them.” - Emma C., TC West Senior High

“My parents have always told me that they “didn’t care what it was, but I had to be involved in something.” Rowing is my something. When we saw it on the LEAP offerings, I knew that if it involved water I wanted to be a part of it. To be able to have this closer to home will make things much easier for our family and bring something really cool to downtown TC!” – Natalie H., TC West Senior High

“When I joined rowing the summer before my freshman year it was because my mom made me. I owe my mom big time! The group of girls that I met from all of the area schools are now some of my closest friends. Rowing has helped me to gain the ability to work hard for what I want. I have also learned to work with others to achieve a common goal. It's intense and I love it!” – Chloe S., TC Central High School

“There's a real sense of team and we all put a lot of effort into each other’s success and not just our own. It has taught me time management, determination, and discipline. I like the competition and the fitness component. Individually you train for strength and endurance, but once you are in the boat with your team - you have to be totally synchronized in order for your boat to move gracefully through the water. It looks so easy and effortless, but it's the most difficult yet motivational sport I've been involved in.” Sarah C., Elk Rapids High School

“Rowing, there is no way to really explain it unless you’ve experienced it. When I was 12, I was asked to help out the team as their coxswain. Three years later I am grateful for that – it made me a better teammate and rower knowing what our coxswain is going through. With the two high schools combining, it has brought me closer to people I would have never known if it weren't for rowing. People ask me, “Doesn't the rivalry get the best of you?” It does not. Rowing has made me a better person and I love it. I get a sense of pride from it and I feel super accomplished. There are not enough 'thank you’s' in the world for the opportunity I have had.” - Abi C., TC West Senior High

Coaches

  • Chris Bott - Coach Chris's rowing career started in high school at Orchard Lake St. Mary's in Michigan. He earned a spot on the varsity team his sophomore year and has competed at the state, regional, national, and international level in boats ranging from eights all the way down to singles. Despite choosing a college that didn't have a rowing team, his passion for the sport remained. Coach Chris has been the head coach for the Women's Rowing Team since its beginning season. Under his leadership, the team has produced top three finishing boats in every event they've entered each year and seen four girls sign with NCAA Division I or II schools with scholarships.
