Montessori Chess Classes

About:

Chess instruction organized and led by a comprehensive curriculum, which covers everything from learning the pieces and basic rules to advanced tactics and game study! Classroom priorities, in order, are: 1) Safety 2) FUN!!! 3) Learning chess.

Class Overview:
Our chess class is open to students from 1st through 8th grade, and all skill levels are welcome—from beginner to advanced. Whether your child is just learning the basic rules or looking to sharpen their tactics, this class offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes lessons, worksheets, hands-on practice, and competitive play through ChessKid.

Classes take place every Thursday from 3:15 PM to 4:30 PM.

Schedule and Sessions:

  • Session 1: October 10, 2024 - December 19, 2024 (No class on November 28)
  • Session 2: January 16, 2025 - March 20, 2025 - Registration Opens Soon
  • Session 3: April 3, 2025 - June 5, 2025 - Registration opens in January

* A minimum of 6 students will be required to run the session. A maximum of 30 students per session will be allowed.

What to Expect:

  • All materials, including chess boards and worksheets, will be provided.
  • Students will participate in tournaments, team games, and challenges to enhance their learning.
  • A point-based system rewards good behavior, participation, and achievement with medals and trophies.

Snack Time: There will be a snack time at the beginning of each class. Students should bring their own snacks.

ClassDojo: Parents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with ClassDojo, the platform we use to track points and provide real-time updates on your child's progress. If you're new to ClassDojo, you can sign up for a free account to stay informed.

Online Chess Club: Please sign up for a free ChessKids account before class starts. Register for a free account at ChessKid.com. The online club will have puzzles, games, matches, tournaments, and more!

Participation Fee

$170.00 per session (10 classes per session).

Registration Deadline & Details

Session 1 Deadline: 2 weeks after the start of the session (10/24/24). Participation fees will not be prorated for those registering after the start of the session.

Session 2 Deadline: 2 weeks after the start of the session (1/30/25). Participation fees will not be prorated for those registering after the start of the session.

How to Register: To register, follow the registration link to the right of the page. Following the close of registration, you will be contacted via email regarding a more detailed schedule.

In the event school is closed due to WEATHER, no LEAP activities will be held per TCAPS policy. There is no guarantee of a make-up date in the case of inclement weather.
                                                                                                                  

Payment is required at the time of registration. You may register online using a Discover, MasterCard, Visa, or ACH (via a checking or savings account) please register below. Payment with cash or check can be made at the LEAP office located at: Traverse City East Middle School, 1776 Three Mile Road, Traverse City (call to make in person payment arrangements) School Year Office hours are Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. Please call the LEAP office at 231.933.7480 for more information.

NOTE: Registration is not complete until your course appears in your dashboard. You will also receive an email from Eleyo confirming your registration. If you do not receive the confirmation email or see the course in your dashboard, be sure you have not left any course items in your shopping basket. If you need assistance please call the LEAP office (231.933.7480). If you did not receive an email from Eleyo or see your course in your dashboard, the payment did not process and the student is not registered.

Amondeuz Graham

Instructor

Amondeuz Graham, an experienced chess player and instructor with over 20 years of tutoring experience, will be leading the class. Coach G has been playing chess since he was 6 years old and has taught chess for 12 years. His goal is to teach students the strategic depths of chess while ensuring an engaging and fun experience.
