  • Fencing (Ages 9-18)

    Beginner Olympic Fencing Classes For ages 9+ Participation Fees: $100 per course All sessions will take place at the Traverse City Fencing Club: 2419 SyBrandt, Suite B, Traverse City, MI 49684 (just north of S. Airport off Cass by the Sara Lee Factory) Traverse City Fencing Club’s (TCFC) youth program is designed as a gateway to the modern sport of fencing. Fencing provides equal opportunities for both boys and girls and if you're looking for a sport that combines speed, agility, and fitness with chess-like strategic thinking then fencing is for you! We are grateful to have the opportunity to introduce kids from our community to Olympic Fencing. At our club we focus on training and competing with the épée. This short course is an opportunity for students to begin learning the basics, including the history of fencing, the basics of swordsmanship, unique footwork, and strategy. Our coaches are USFA and SafeSport certified. Robert Bartle, co-founder of TCFC and LEAP coach, emphasizes the importance of fitness, coordination, and the mental-emotional flexibility needed for peak performance. His coaching has helped fencers achieve high rankings and top finishes in regional and national competitions. Helpful Information Fencing equipment will be available for students to use. Fencers should wear athletic clothing, including long pants (no shorts) and indoor athletic shoes. Fencers should bring a water bottle to every session. Have your fencer bring a healthy snack or eat a light meal prior to class. Fencers are encouraged to bring a notebook for reflection and recording information. Class may occasionally run long, but we will do our best to get fencers out on time. Participation Fees: $100 per session. Winter Session: Mondays, February 2nd & 9th 5:30 - 7:30 pm NOTE: The same curriculum is being taught in each session. Deadline for registration will be the Thursday prior to classes starting. Registration deadline: Thursday, January 29th Registration deadlines are final. Late registrations may not be accepted after the posted registration close date.   • 6th Grade BRIDGE (Social Emotional Learning Group)

    About B.R.I.D.G.E Social Emotional Learning Group Are you looking for a fun and meaningful activity for your 6th grader? Do they enjoy games and crafts? Are they shy or wanting to make more social connections? This one-time workshop is designed to help kids connect with new friends, build confidence, and develop important life skills through fun activities! It’s a wonderful way for your child to make new social connections, strengthen their self-esteem, and create lasting memories before the holiday season begins. Who: 6th grade students Date/Time: January 14th @ TC West Middle School Little Theatre. Directly after school from 2:45 pm - 4:30 pm *January 21st has been reserved as a make-up date in the case of an inclement weather day on 1/14/26 During this time, the following goals will be achieved through developmentally appropriate interventions and activities. Goal 1: Strengthen Emotional Awareness and Regulation Goal 2: Build Positive Peer Relationships and Empathy Goal 3: Foster Confidence, Goal-Setting, and a Sense of Belonging What is an SEL group? SEL groups provide students with opportunities to make new friends and enhance social/emotional skills through creative, meaningful activities. Why are SEL groups important? In addition to just plain being fun, these groups teach important life long skills. Research shows that social and emotional competencies lead to positive student outcomes that are important for success inschool and in life! Program Details and Cost: The cost of this program will be $45 per student. The cost will cover the cost of a light snack, art materials, and the facilitator's time. While all students may enjoy and benefit from these experiences, BRIDGE are particularly helpful for students wanting to create new friendships, practice positive social skills and build confidence. In the event of low enrollment, you will be contacted regarding a refund in full. Early registration is suggested as each group is capped at 45 students. Additional groups may be added based on interest. Facilitators Kari L. de Boer, LPC, ATR, RYT Kari is a registered art therapist, counselor, and registered yoga teacher whose work centers on holistic healing and creative expression. Her background includes developing art therapy programs in hospital and community settings, teaching mindfulness and yoga, and supporting youth in educational environments such as the Boys & Girls Club, Head Start, and Interlochen Arts Academy. Kari brings a warm, inclusive approach that encourages each student to discover their strengths and develop healthy coping skills for life inside and outside the classroom. Kari L. de Boer, LPC, ATR, RYT Kristin Sulecki, LMSW Kristin is a fully licensed social worker with extensive training and experience, operating a solo practice working with children, adolescents, college students, and adults at the CenterPointe Building in Traverse City. She is committed to authentic therapeutic relationships, meaningful sessions, and positive change. Kristin has enjoyed teaching social work at the associate and graduate levels, presenting at conferences, supervising interns, and coaching school mental health professionals across the state. She has worked with all ages as a home-based counselor and as a private therapist, but the bulk of her career was as a general education elementary school social worker for 25 years. Students knew Kristin as a “peace teacher” and pronounced her name “Mrs. So Lucky.” She is an advocate for social-emotional learning and is passionate about creating connections through groups and games. Kristin Sulecki, LMSW Crystal Duncan, LMSW Crystal Duncan is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and is the founder of Calming Connections Counseling Services. She offers online therapy across Michigan and in-person sessions inTraverse City. With a warm, nurturing approach, she specializes in supporting clients facing anxiety, ADHD, depression, and life transitions. Crystal has worked as a school social worker in multiple local schools, providing support to Special Education students with identified needs in social-emotional learning. She has helped students build skills through classroom support, small groups, and one-on-one sessions. Her client-centered approach creates a safe, compassionate space where individuals feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow. Crystal Duncan, LMSW Questions?
