Airport off Cass by the Sara Lee Factory) Traverse City Fencing Club’s (TCFC) youth program is designed as a gateway to the modern sport of fencing. Fencing provides equal opportunities for both boys and girls and if you're looking for a sport that combines speed, agility, and fitness with chess-like strategic thinking then fencing is for you! We are grateful to have the opportunity to introduce kids from our community to Olympic Fencing. At our club we focus on training and competing with the épée. This short course is an opportunity for students to begin learning the basics, including the history of fencing, the basics of swordsmanship, unique footwork, and strategy. Our coaches are USFA and SafeSport certified. Robert Bartle, co-founder of TCFC and LEAP coach, emphasizes the importance of fitness, coordination, and the mental-emotional flexibility needed for peak performance. His coaching has helped fencers achieve high rankings and top finishes in regional and national competitions. Helpful Information Fencing equipment will be available for students to use. Fencers should wear athletic clothing, including long pants (no shorts) and indoor athletic shoes. Fencers should bring a water bottle to every session. Have your fencer bring a healthy snack or eat a light meal prior to class. Fencers are encouraged to bring a notebook for reflection and recording information.
